Burley Bout Results

An athletic combination of speed, power, balance and grace, Burley’s record of 94-5-1 is considered on balance the finest ever at Lehigh. As Mike Caruso says, “Darryl is the guy who did it the most consistently — the highest quality over all four years.” He is the only four-time NCAA finalist to wrestle in the East and one of only five Eastern wrestlers to win Midlands twice — reaching the finals five times.  He won his first of two NCAA titles as a true freshman by upsetting top-seed and four-time All American Mike Land of Iowa State in the finals, to end Land’s then second-best ever streak of 84 straight wins — and did it in Ames for Land’s final senior bout at home.

Darryl’s most memorable rivalry was versus Olympic Gold medal winner Randy Lewis of Iowa. In Burley’s second career varsity bout he met the defending NCAA 2nd (eventual two-time champ, beating Darryl in the 1980 finals) and led for most of the second & third periods before losing a breath-taking 14-13 thriller to Lewis in Grace Hall. Burley’s only six blemishes on his career record came against three NCAA champions with 11 All American medals whom he beat at some point in his career — including Jim Gibbons of Iowa State by 14-4 and 16-6. Darryl leads Lehigh all-time in points scored per bout (16.6); average win margin (11.7); the percentage of bonus wins — an amazing 76% (84% his last two years) — with 33 falls, 30 superiors and only 10 majors.  Of his 94 wins, only 18 came by regular decision and only five of those by three points or less — just one in his final two years. One third of his career opponents were All Americans and he accomplished all this before the largest crowds ever assembled at Lehigh, averaging nearly 4,000 in the opening years of Stabler Arena.
