Butch and Sundance, Darryl
(Burley) and
Pete (Schuyler) went everywhere together: New Jersey state
finals - Burley 3,
Schuyler 2; Junior Nationals
- Pete 6th at
132; Darryl 2nd at 143. They enrolled at Lehigh
and became roommates and
best friends,
placing
at the Easterns, Midlands and
Nationals together.. Both starters together in 1979
and 1980, Pete went 20-4
but missed two straight EIWAs, then sat out
1981 since he needed to move up to 134 and Darryl
was still there — the
next year, Burley willingly sat out so he could
made way for his buddy, plus the next year as well by going 142. Presto!
Two EIWA titles for Pete and an NCAA
3rd. Top bouts: a frosh loss 10-9 to Tom Husted,
Wisconsin (yes, they too would hitch up together,
winning EIWA titles together in 1982); a Sheridan
win over two-time All American Dave Cooke,
North Carolina, an NCAA 2nd
in 1982; a 9-1 major vs.
three-time All American John Giura, Wisconsin;
a 6-3 home dual win December 1982 vs. Iowa
three-time All American Jeff Kerber;
avenging an All-Star Classic loss to Missouri’s
Kris Whelan by winning their bout for
third at the NCAAs, 4-3. When last seen on the mats together, Pete
and Darryl were ranked top 4 nationally in senior
freestyle ranks. |
